What… When… & Why… do you need the NEW (blue) 3D Embossing Plate.
We all love to dry emboss our cardstock, right? Ever since the introduction of the Big Shot machine, many years ago… it has become a staple of our crafting pleasure. And now we are anxious to learn what Stampin’ Up! has in store for us next. But we are still waiting to learn about the new machines. So in the meantime let’s learn about the new 3D Embossing Plate.
What is this new plate?
This is an embossing plate that is a bit thicker than our regular clear embossing plates we are familiar with.
When do you need this blue plate?
You use it only with our new 3D embossing folders. It takes this one plate on top of the folder to create a great impression of the image. If you don’t have the plate, you have to experiment with cardstock shims to get a good thickness.
Why the New 3D Embossing Plate?
As I mentioned yesterday, and a few other times, with the new 2019 annual catalog, the manufacturer of our embossing folders changed. With the change came copyright issues, so they couldn’t simply copy them. There had to be some changes to the design; and of course, improvements made where possible. We also changed their names! They use to be called Textured Impression Embossing Folders or TIEF for short, now we call them 3D Embossing Folders.
Tip to keeping them straight!
The simplest way to keep the old style and the new style folders straight is to write on them with sharpie! I know Sharpies have been the topic of conversation recently, but there will be no Sharpie-gate here…
3D = BLUE
The new 3D Embossing folders need a thicker sandwich then the previous thick folders. Stampin’ Up is offering this Blue Embossing Plate for a fix. But you can only find it online, as it wasn’t ready for the catalog when it went to the printer. If you have the new style folder I suggest you could write 3D = BLUE. This would remind you that the folder needs the blue plate. So one blue plate on top of your embossing folder.
STD = 2 CLEAR
Our standard, non thick folders, both before and now require a sandwich of two clear plates. So you could write STD = 2 CLEAR. So place your embossing folder between the two clear plates.
DYN = 1 CLEAR
The previous thick folders the Dynamic folder needed just 1 clear plate. So maybe something like DYN = 1 CLEAR. So place one clear plate on top of your embossing folder.
One more word of caution in labeling…
Make sure that if you have a Dynamic Folder from before June 2019 you labeling it DYN. The folders that carried over into the catalog from the previous edition have been re-formatted to the new 3D style. So if you have a current pattern of a folder, be sure you know whether it is Dynamic or 3D!
Final thoughts on embossing sandwiches…
I know this can all be a bit confusing. Even I have had trouble re-training my crafting brain. And there is evidence of that in some of my recent Show & Tell videos. Here are a couple of tips that might help.
Tip 1 – If you build an embossing plate sandwich and it is too difficult to run through your machine, that is a good indicator that is stacked wrong. Try again.
Tip 2 – If you build an embossing sandwich and you run it through and there is no pressure at all. Then try the blue plate. Odds are it is one of the new 3D folders!
If you have ordered any new 3D folders from the current catalog, you should really consider ordering the Blue 3D Embossing Plate.
